The Florida Gators went 8-4 last year but they have just 10 starters back for that team. The good news is that they recruited well and have a couple of easy games to give their new players some experience before facing Alabama next week. That game should be a doozy and it could possibly have the Gators looking ahead. We shall see. Florida is picked to finish 2nd in the SEC East and after watching that Georgia defense on Saturday, second is about the best they can do this year. The Gators have won four straight openers.
The Gators, one of the favorites in the SEC, took down Florida Atlantic in their opener. Florida failed to cover the large spread in the 35-14 victory.
The Gators had two 100-yard rushers lead the way. QB Emory Jones threw 2 interceptions in a very underwhelming performance.
The Florida Gators come into this game with a record of 1-0 this year. In their last contest, the Gators took the field against the Florida Atlantic Owls and notched a win by a score of 35-14. Emory Jones finished 17/27 with 113 yards passing and 1 TD. He had a quarterback rating of 95.5 and finished the game with 2 picks. Malik Davis led the offense in rushing for the Gators with 14 carries for 104 yards (7.4 yds per attempt). The Florida Gators ran the ball a total of 46 different times and amassed 400 yds, earning them an average of 8.7 yards per attempt. When all was said and done, they ran 81 plays which totaled 553 yds. Florida allowed 19 completions on 33 tries for 261 yards, and a completion rate of 57.6%. Against the rush, the Gators gave up 92 yds on 37 tries, which averages out to 2.5 yards per run surrendered.
The Florida Gators exited their season-opening game without any new injuries, according to head coach Dan Mullen. However, the Gators are still a bit banged up at a couple of depth spots defensively entering week two versus USF.
After missing four reserve interior defensive linemen against Florida Atlantic, Mullen shared that the Gators are "hoping" redshirt freshman Lamar Goods will make his UF debut against USF on Saturday, while the remaining three linemen are continuing to rehab without definitive return dates.
