This is going to be a tough environment for the Scarlet Knights' first road game in two years. The Carrier Dome is not a welcoming atmosphere for opponents. That said, Rutgers is an experienced team. Greg Schiano is plenty familiar with preparing his players for what the Dome is like. Syracuse is better than many people expected and have some talent on both sides of the ball. Running back Sean Tucker gashed Ohio for 181 yards on the ground in the Orange's opener, and Camden native Duce Chestnut racked up eight tackles and an interception. Don Bosco product Tommy DeVito is a veteran at this point, and is effective with both his legs and arm.
In the past Rutgers has been the victim of plenty of blowouts. Then Greg Schiano arrived on campus for the second time and the Scarlet Knights showed glimpses of being a competitive team in his first season. On Sept. 4, in their first game of the 2021 season, the Scarlet Knights may have finally arrived after destroying Temple 61-14. Temple is not Ohio State, but the Scarlet Knights, who went 3-6 last season, opened up the 2021 campaign in rare dominant fashion. This game was supposed to begin last Thursday, but was moved up two days due to the effects of Hurricane Ida.
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights come into this matchup with a record of 1-0 this season. In their last matchup, the Scarlet Knights took on the Temple Owls and notched a win by a score of 61-14. Noah Vedral connected on 15/27 with 138 yds passing and 1 TD. He had a QB rating of 110.7 and walked away from the contest with no picks. Isaih Pacheco led the offense in rushing for the Scarlet Knights with 15 attempts for 48 yds (3.2 yards per carry). The Rutgers Scarlet Knights ran the football 51 different times and accumulated 220 yds, earning them an average of 4.3 yards per attempt. In all, they ran 80 plays which totaled 365 yds. Rutgers allowed 8 pass completions on 27 attempts for 148 yards, and a completion percentage of 29.6%. Against the rush, the Scarlet Knights gave up 113 yards on 36 attempts, which calculates to 3.1 yds per rush surrendered.
Patrice Rene DB 9/5 Undisclosed QUESTIONABLE Rene sat out the previous game with an unknown injury, and it remains to be determined if he will be available to play Saturday against Syracuse.
